A Kalihi man who was found guilty of murdering his adopted mother with a kitchen knife will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Judge Rom Trader sentenced Charly Hernane to life in prison with the possibility of parole on Tuesday.
A jury found the 29-year-old man guilty of second-degree murder in August for killing 56-year-old Teresita Hernane.
The crime happened in May 2011 at the Kalihi home they shared with other family members.
"Probably not one will ever know why you did but you chose to act that day, reasons only known to you. As the results of that, took the life of a very good woman trying to do everything she could. Looked out for you," said Judge Trader.
"The love my sister gave to my adopted child is more than anything else, more than herself," said the victim's sister Leonida Aquino. "Maybe my sister she is happy right now wherever she stay."
Aquino says she still loves her nephew and even sympathizes for him despite the brutal crime.
Hernane had the opportunity to address the court on Tuesday but had nothing to say.
