Kamehameha Schools unveiled plans for a unique a space Tuesday in Kakaako -- an indoor park.
It doesn't look like much now but in a couple of months, the goal is to turn an empty warehouse into an indoor park.
"We need an indoor space where people can think, collaborate and grow and build a community, and this is the place," said Christian O'Connor, of Kamehameha Schools.
The warehouse is on Cooke Street. The planned park will be called Kaka'ako Agora.
"We want the arts to be a highly prominent part of this community. So this is an example of how we're doing that," said Paul Quintiliani, of Kamehameha Schools.
Kaka'ako Wterfront Park is located just a couple of blocks from the proposed indoor park. Still, organizers said there is a need for an indoor space.
Planners hope to welcome all ages to the facility, plus open it up to theatrical productions, comedy acts, speakers and videographers.
The indoor park is part of a massive redevelopment plan. Kamehameha Schools is rebuilding nine city blocks between South Street and Ward Avenue.
The goal is to make the area a mixed use, mixed income neighborhood. that will include high-rises and shops.
Planners hope to have construction completed in the next 11 years.
