A first time award for a decorated Honolulu principal.

The Department of Education announced Thursday that King Intermediate Principal Sheena Alaiasa became the first Hawaii educator to be named National Middle Level Principal of the Year by MetLife and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

As the newly minted winner of this award, Alaiasa was given grants totaling $5,000 and will attend an honoring ceremony in the nation's Capitol this coming month.

During her four years at King Intermediate, Alaiasa has also been recognized for her contributions toward student achievement. Over 600 students attend King with eight elementary schools feeding into that campus.

Before working at King, Alaiasa served as principal for Heeia Elementary in Kaneohe. She holds a master's degree in educational administration and a bachelor's degree in elementary education.
