LIHUE, Hawaii -

The 38-year-old man accused of pushing a woman off Kauai's Kalalau cliffside has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

Justin Wynn Klein of Kilauea pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless endangerment to avoid going to trial for the previous charge of attempted murder.

The December 2012 incident left 31-year-old Japanese visitor Azusa Shita Ino critically injured, but she has since recovered.

Klein remained a fugitive for about two months after the incident. The court ruled he was mentally fit to stand trial.

Klein said in court Tuesday that he changed his plea because he was there the day an incident happened and it caused an injury.
