Spellers are swarming a resort just a few minutes outside Washington on Wednesday for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Students are coming from places like Italy, Japan, Jamaica and South Korea as well as from every U.S. state.
That, of course, includes Konawaena Middle School's Christianne Abella.
The 8th grader won Hawaii's state spelling bee just a few months ago.
Like many of the competitors, Abella has other interests. She loves to draw. Her favorite novel is "The Picture of Dorian Gray."
But, on Wednesday, Abella said she the approximately 300 other spellers are focusing on the words they have to compete with.
So far on Wednesday, Abella correctly spelled "sassafras" in Round 2 of the competition. In Round 3, she correctly spelled "teleology."
The eventual winner will get $30,000.
Good luck to Christianne and all of the competitors!
