There's an opening for the "best job in the world" and a Laie man is in the running. Cody Mafatu Easterbrook is counting on the public to help him land that job.

HONOLULU -

There's an opening for "the best job in the world," and a Laie man is in the running.

Cody Mafatu Easterbrook said he already has the best job in the world. He's a second-grade teacher at Kahaluu Elementary School and the Polynesian Cultural Center's luau emcee.

"But when I saw this posting for the best job around the world, I thought, man, this job is made for me, so I got to give it a try," he said.

He's trying to get hired as "chief world explorer" for Jauntaroo.com.

Out of thousands of applicants from around the globe, Easterbrook's submission video was one of 50 chosen, making him a finalist to travel the world for a year and get paid $100,000 to blog about it.

"I believe that the world is the best classroom," said Easterbrook. "Being an educator myself, I've learned so much just from the few places that I have traveled."

He said that he already has tremendous support from his students and co-workers.

"They're excited for the adventure and definitely, they're going to follow my journey along the way. So that's the beauty of the job is, not only do I get to experience it, but I'll get to share it with people around me, all over the world."

As far as his current jobs, Easterbrook said, "I think from tentatively, what we said, I said, 'Hey, I might be traveling the world.' They said, 'By all means, go for it.'"

But Easterbrook said he needs your help, through votes on his Jauntaroo.com page.

"I just invite the people of Hawaii to do what we do best -- we get behind our own," he said. "So support this local guy right here and send me around world. It's going to be a great experience and I expect everybody to follow me along the journey."

Voting runs through the month of October. If Easterbrook wins, his travels will begin in January.
