A local business has teamed up with a nonprofit to make sure those in need enjoy a big, hearty holiday meal this year.
Rita Remaud and her friends would have gone without her favorite food -- lau lau, kalua pork and haupia -- were it not for Lanakila Meals on Wheels.
"Oh, I love this. I'm not new to the islands so this has been my favorite food for a long time," Remaud said.
For the first time, the nonprofit went out to nine senior community centers and apartment buildings to serve 400 Christmas lunches.
"It's a time for us together because of these seniors. This is the only time they have a holiday meal. It means so much for the Lanakila program to provide those services," said volunteer Harry Maxwell.
Lanakila was able to serve roughly 40 meals at the Pohulani Elderly Apartments, all thanks to a large grant.
Yum! International, which runs Pizza Hut and KFC, donated $20,000 for the food.
"We're making a difference in the seniors home. Just seeing our happy face, it brought something to our hearts," said Aries Jackson, of Yum! Restaurant International.
While it warmed many hearts, it also warmed many stomachs, bringing nourishment and smiles.
Lanakila hopes people will continue giving and donating so those in need will be fed and not searching for food during the holidays.
