Last Price Busters stores to close on Oahu this weekend
Six of the eight Price Busters stores on Oahu have closed down.
The last two stores -- in Kalihi and Kailua -- will shut their doors by the end of the weekend.
The closures mean nearly 200 employees will be laid off.
Judy Boulton was one of the customers taking advantage of the 75 percent off deals at the Price Busters liquidation sale Wednesday.
"I got some great uniform pants. I'm a nurse and only for $2. I'm used to paying $20," she said.
The locally owned discount store will close permanently by Sunday.
The retailer said it had to close due to increasing shipping and operating costs.
The store started on Oahu in 1992.
Organizing the last of the merchandise and seeing the bare shelves has been difficult for Tabitha Williams. She started with the company 11 years ago and grew within the ranks to become a store manager.
"I would say yesterday, taking the fixtures down at the Highland store, is where it hit me again," Williams said. "Just looking around the store knowing that's where I started."
However, Julie Plant, Price Busters' operations manager, said the company is actively helping employees find other jobs by working with the state unemployment office and hosting a job fair.
"We had tons of retailers who contacted us who wanted to be part of this job fair so we held a job fair for 100 employees," Plant said. "They had the opportunity to do interviewing already and turn in job applications."
The Kailua store will close Thursday while the one in Kalihi will remain open through Sunday.
The store manager said whatever is left after the liquidation sale will be donated to local schools and churches.
