U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz was named the Democratic nominee over Rep. Colleen Hanabusa in the Puna Special Election.
Schatz won with 115,397 votes over Hanabusa's 113,628 votes.
Schatz expressed joy over the win and thanked the Big Island community for their support in the election.
The results were a disappointment to the Hanabusa campaign. She says voters were disenfranchised with the election scheduled so closely after the destruction left behind by Tropical Storm Iselle.
The congresswoman says her campaign will review the results.
