The late Zachary Manago will be remembered this Saturday and Sunday in a bicycle ride in his memory.
The event is Zachary Manago's Ride in Paradise. It's a two-day ride around the perimeter of Oahu.
On Dec. 17, 2010, Manago was hit by a vehicle on Kamehameha Highway near Wahiawa. The driver did not stop and Manago died. He was 18.
Manago was a pitcher for Moanalua High School and was going to play for Hawaii Pacific University.
Manago was passionate about safer bicycling facilities and wanted to make Hawaii safe so more people could bike.
Family, friends and the Hawaii Bicycling League started a ride in his memory two years ago, bringing awareness to motorists and bicyclists that we can share the same road, need to follow the laws, and watch for and respect each other so we can prevent future tragedies.
In addition to increasing awareness, the ride raises funds for the Hawaii Bicycling League's Safety Education and Awareness fund. All donations are used for additional out-of-pocket expenses to third parties.
