8.3-magnitude earthquake strikes near Russia

An 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no Pacific wide tsunami generated.

It happened at around 7:45 p.m. HST about 225 miles west-southwest of Esso, Russia.

Just before 5 a.m. HST Friday, there was a magnitude 6.8 aftershock in the same area, according to the USGS.  There was no Pacific wide tsunami alert for this earthquake.
