One person is dead and eight others are alive after a plane crashed in waters off Kalaupapa on Molokai Wednesday afternoon, according to Maui County fire officials.

The person who died was identified by Maui police as Hawaii Department of Health Director Loretta Fuddy.

Makani Kai Air says eight passengers and one pilot were on board the Cessna Caravan that was scheduled to take off at around 3:35 p.m. from Kalaupapa.

Makani Kai Air President Richard Schuman estimates the plane went down about 10 minutes into the flight.

Maui police say the plane lost power and the pilot landed the plane in the water about a half mile outside Kalaupapa.

Five people were pulled from the water alive by Maui fire crews.  The Coast Guard pulled three more people from the water alive.

Three people on the plane were transported to Oahu.  Three others went to Molokai General Hospital and two declined treatment and are planning to stay in Kalaupapa overnight, according to Maui fire officials.

Emergency Medical Services officials in Honolulu said a 74-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The Coast Guard was using two helicopters and one C-130 plane in the search and rescue operation.  The Coast Guard Cutter Ahi from Honolulu and a boat from Coast Guard Station Maui were also on the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
