Honolulu police say a man had been lying on the road in Pacific Palisades when a vehicle ran over the man, killing him early Wednesday morning.

PEARL CITY, Hawaii -

Honolulu police say a 33-year-old Pearl City man, who Pacific Palisades residents say had been lying down on the road, was run over by a vehicle and died early Wednesday.

The medical examiner has identified the man as Andrew Mercado and ruled his death as an accident.

It happened at the 2400 block of Auhuhu Street in Pacific Palisades just before 1 a.m.

"A neighbor had seen a male laying down in the middle of the roadway and called 911," said Lt. Bobby Towne of the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division.  "While she was on the phone with 911, a vehicle came and had run over the male."

Mercado was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the incident.

Police are investigating why Mercado was lying on the road.

Auhuhu Street was closed during the investigation and reopened at around 3:30 a.m.
