A sleep-driving college student crashed his SUV into Oak Hollow Lake early Tuesday morning, High Point police said.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. near the marina off North Centennial Street.

The 21-year-old High Point University student, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

The student was asleep in his dorm when he got up, got in his SUV and drove off while still sleeping, police said.

The vehicle crashed through the marina gate and went into the lake. He woke up only when the vehicle hit the water, police said.

He climbed out of his car and went to a nearby house to get help.

Alcohol wasn't a factor in the crash, police said. The student was found partially clothed.
