A judge sentenced a man Monday who pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter to 20 years in prison with a mandatory five years and credit for time served.
Prosecutors say Reynaldo Valdes-Paz shot Damon Jones three times at the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Kapiolani Boulevard back in 2010. Jones survived.
Valdes-Paz maintained his innocence for nearly three years until prosecutors agreed to a plea deal in June.
The prosecution agreed to the plea deal because there were so many areas under dispute, including who brought the gun to the scene.
Judge Ronald Lee is deciding whether Valdes-Paz has to pay the victim's $75,000 in medical bills.
