Maui beach monitored after shark sighting report

LAHAINA, Hawaii -

A shark sighting kept lifeguards and Department of Land and Natural Resources officers on watch Wednesday afternoon at Ukumehame Beach State Park.

DLNR officials received a report from a 43-year-old Haiku man about the sighting of an eight-inch tiger shark.

The man was identified Matt Kinoshita, owner of Kazuma Surfboards. says he was paddle boarding about 75 yards from the park when he saw the shark approaching. Kinoshita said he turned his board toward the shark and ran over its back with the board. Fortunately, he did not fall of his board and lost sight of the shark.

Officers and lifeguards monitored the area for two hours, and warned divers and surfers.
