Maui man ordered not to drive after hit-and-run crash

Walter Vierra, 43, of Wailuku was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide in connection with the hit-and-run death of a 31-year-old woman, who was a mother of three children.

WAIHEE-WAIEHU, Hawaii -

A Maui man was ordered not to drive Wednesday after being indicted in connection with a hit and run crash that killed a pedestrian.

The Maui News says 44-year old Walter Vierra Senior pleaded not guilty to charges of negligent homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, driving without a license, and promotion of a dangerous drug

The fatal crash happened in August of 2012.

31-year-old Brandy Mendes was walking home when she was struck in Waiehu. Her body was found the next morning. Vierra turned himself in the following week. He was indicted by a grand jury in January and posted bail to be released.

Vierra's trial date is set for April 22.
