Maui mayoral candidate arrested by police
Maui police arrested a candidate for mayor Tuesday night on a warrant claiming he violated conditions of his bail.
Nelson Waikiki Jr., 49, pleaded guilty to four felony securities fraud charges in April. He is awaiting sentencing and was released on bail with certain conditions.
The Maui News reports that after he failed twice to show up for drug testing, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The 49-year-old appeared at a mayoral forum Tuesday night at Seabury Hall and told the Maui News that he did not know there was a warrant for his arrest. Moments later police arrested him.
Sentencing in the securities fraud case is set for Dec. 10.
