A 40-year-old visitor was sent to the hospital on Maui due to a shark bite.

KAHULUI, Hawaii -

Maui County officials say Kanaha Beach was closed Thursday afternoon after a kitesurfer was reportedly bitten by a shark.

The bite happened at around 3:25 p.m.  The kitesurfer was about 100 yards off of Ka'a Point when he was bitten between his right calf and heel.

The man made it to shore on his own and he was transported to the hospital.  County officials say he appeared in good condition and was talking.  The man is described as in his early 40s, possibly from another country.

At around 4 p.m., lifeguard spotted a tiger shark that is 12-to-15-feet-long.  It is not known if that was the shark that bit the kitesurfer.

The beach was reopened at noon on Friday.
