An Independence mother and her son have been reunited after spending 38 years apart.

Betty Carpenter said she was just 15 years old and living in northeast Kansas City when she gave birth to a baby boy and then gave him up for adoption. She said she has dreamed of meeting him again, and that dream has now come true.

"January 1, I woke up and I knew I was going to find him this year," she said.

As she and other relatives waited for her son's plane to arrive from Florida, she said she could hardly contain herself.

"It is beyond any dream you can ever possibly imagine having," she said. "I'm sick to my stomach, I'm so excited."

Then, at last, her son came down the jetway.

"That's him," she said. "Oh, my God."

She said she didn't know until two weeks ago that her son's name is now Ricky Loughlin and that he had been searching for his mother, too.

He also now knows that he has a brother and sister from the same father, and Carpenter has two more grandchildren.

Loughlin wound up spending his childhood just down the street from his birth family. He said he got into drugs, moved to Florida, turned his life around and became a preacher.

"You know, there's no resentment or no hurt, there's no anger because I know God has shown me over the years that that was his plan," Loughlin said.

He said he and his family will spend the next two weeks in Kansas City.
