HONOLULU -

A private association of National Guard members plans to hold its annual conference in Honolulu at the Hawaii Convention Center this year even though some at the Pentagon have questioned the wisdom of meeting in a vacation destination.

National Guard Association of the United States spokesman John Goheen said Wednesday 3,000 to 3,500 people are expected to attend the September convention.

He says there's a perception that people go to meetings in a tropical environment only to have fun. He says some in the Pentagon have privately questioned the choice of location.

But Goheen says Hawaii is home to the U.S. Pacific Command, which is responsible for U.S. military activity in Asia and the Pacific.

Goheen says attendees will learn about the region just as U.S. policy is placing greater importance on the area.
