A Dover mother said she took on a 300-pound bear with a baby gate and won.

“I picked it up and just whacked,” said Lisa Webb. “I got him right in the nose.”

Webb was staying in a family house in Madison for Labor Day weekend when she heard a commotion. She ran outside and found her dogs face to face with a bear, only divided by a baby gate she was using to keep the dogs on the deck.

“I looked and within inches of me was the bear and all that was between us was this gate,” Webb said. “I mean, I could have touched the bear if I wanted to.”

Webb said she herded the dogs inside, but her instincts took over when her daughter ran out.

“I was screaming and the bear didn’t really care, so I took the baby gate and I whacked it in the head with the baby gate and then dropped it and went running into the house,” she said.

Once inside, Webb realized her dog Ozzy was wounded.

“He must have swiped at Ozzy twice because he had 12 puncture wounds, and you could tell it was just like a swat,” she said.

Ozzy had surgery and is on the mend at home. Webb said she is counting her blessings.

“How it didn’t claw me, I don’t know,” she said. “How it swiped at him and didn’t swipe at me is beyond I don’t know. I guess I was just lucky.”
