We showed you a sneak preview of Halekauwila Place last week; the latest affordable state rental project.
Developer Stanford Carr called it the most gratifying project he has worked on.
Tuesday was the first day that some of the residents got to see what they will soon call home. A Honolulu couple was one of the lucky families who were chosen from more than a thousand people who applied for one of the 204 units.
"I am so happy that we are here and are going to move here. My whole family is happy for us too," said new resident Maryann Jenkins.
"Oh I can't express myself. There's no words; I am in Heaven," said Joseph Jenkins, Maryann's husband. "This is what we need. This is what the island needs. This is what the people need."
What makes the new high rise more in demand is that the units are also pet friendly.
Studio apartments in the state rental project start at just under $1,000 a month and three bedrooms are just under $1,400.
