Passersby save the day after porcupine’s mother hit by car.

EDGEWOOD, N.M. -

‘Barbie’ the baby porcupine has quite the survival story.

This spring, the porcupine’s mother was hit and killed by a car, with Barbie still in the womb. Passersby saw her being born and one cut her out of the amniotic sack, tied off the umbilical cord and took her to a rehab center in Lubbock, Texas.

After being nursed by hand in Lubbock for a couple of months, Barbie was brought to the Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood, New Mexico, a home for injured and rehabilitated animals.

She took to her new home quite well.

Because Barbie has only known people, she can never be released back into the wild.
