New sedative guidelines in effect for Hawaii dentists
Starting Monday, the state will require Hawaii dentists to adhere to new guidelines on the use of sedatives on patients.
The rules come in the aftermath of the death of 3-year-old Finley Boyle, who went into cardiac arrest after oral sedation in the Kailua office of dentist Lilly Geyer.
The regulations, signed by Gov. Neil Abercrombie last week, require dentists to have advanced training in sedation and general anesthesia and to have property monitoring and emergency equipment and staff.
