WAILEA-MAKENA, Hawaii -

Maui County fire officials say no injuries were reported Monday night after a plane made an emergency landing on Piilani Highway near Kilohana Drive in the Wailea-Makena part of Maui.

Fire crews were called to the scene just after 7 p.m.

Fire officials say the plane experience engine trouble and made a landing about 50 yards south of the Piilani Highway and Kilohana Drive intersection.

About 10 people were on board -- eight passengers and two pilots.

Fire department personnel say the aircraft is a Mokulele Airlines Express plane.

Kihei resident Kevin J. Olson spotted the plane coming in "fast and low" and says he knew something was wrong right away.

"It was lower than we are and we're 400 feet up the mountain, so it was either going to ditch in the ocean or ditch somewhere down there," said Olson. "It was a real surprise that he didn't hit any cars or houses. He knew exactly where he needed to go and where he had to be. The amount of time he had to come in and put the plane down he did a great job. He saved probably everyone on board."
