MAKAHA, Hawaii -

Honolulu Ocean Safety officials say a dead sea turtle was found in waters off Oahu's Leeward Coast on Thursday.

Lifeguards saw that a sea turtle was injured in the water off Makaha.  The lifeguard swam to the sea turtle but the animal was already dead.

Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the cause of the sea turtle death.

Lifeguards took pictures of the sea turtle which showed a large crack in the shell.

All sea turtles occurring in U.S. waters are listed under the Endangered Species Act and are under the joint jurisdiction of NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
