HONOLULU -

More than 350 people have signed an online petition calling for the University of Hawaii Board Regents to reject presidential candidate Francis Wiercinski.

Organizers of the petition say the retired Lieutenant General is not qualified to lead the UH system.

One of the authors told KITV this was made evident at last week's public forum at the Manoa campus.

"Not only did he confirm my worries, but he increased them because he seemed to have absolutely no understanding of how a university works nor did he seem to have much interest in how a university works and he also seemed to have a vantage point. That was really military in orientation.

Organizers tell us they plan to deliver the petition to the board of regents at its meeting on Thursday.

Wiercinski is up against Interim UH President David Lassner for the position.
