The anticipated tornado watch has been issued for portions of north and northwest Alabama, northeast Louisiana, and central and northeast Mississippi.
The Storm Prediction Center has labeled this line of storms a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" (PDS). A PDS is a rare designation issued at the discretion of the forecaster. It implies there is an enhanced risk of severe and life-threatening weather and usually a major tornado outbreak is anticipated.
PDS watches are uncommon, less than 3% of watches issued by the Storm Prediction Center from 1996 to 2005 were PDS watches.
