Police arrest woman after pedestrian critically injured in Kahala
Honolulu police arrested a 24-year-old woman on suspicion of driving drunk after the car she was operating hit an 89-year-old man crossing the street in Kahala early Saturday.
The incident happened about 5 a.m. at the intersection of Hunakai Street and Kilauea Avenue.
Police also arrested the suspect on suspicion of negligent injury and a $130 misdemeanor contempt warrant.
Lieutenant Bobby Towne of the police department's Traffic Investigation Division said the woman was heading toward Kahala Mall on Kilauea when she made a left turn onto Hunakai and hit the victim who was in a crosswalk.
Towne said it appeared the woman had been drinking.
Towne said the woman had the green light but should have yielded to the pedestrian who also had the green light and was in a marked crosswalk.
The woman lives on the mainland and is home visiting family members who live in Kahala, according to Towne. The victim also lives in Kahala, Towne said.
Police closed the makai-bound lanes of Hunakai between Koae Street and Kilauea Avenue while the investigated the crash.
