WAIANAE, Hawaii -

Emergency Medical Services officials say a man in his 60s was hospitalized in critical condition early Wednesday morning after he was hit by a car in Waianae.

It happened just before 1:15 a.m. on Farrington Highway in front of the 7-Eleven store.

"The pedestrian was walking along the shoulder of the roadway when he stepped into the lane of traffic, struck by a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old male," said Lt. Bobby Towne of the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division.

Farrington Highway was contraflowed during the investigation. It has since been reopened.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
