A Cessna 172 owned by Moore Air ended up in a barren field just off the H-2 Ka Uka freeway exit, near the Waipio Costco.

The student pilot and instructor were flying at about 2,000 feet when they say the engine cut out and they had to quickly find a place to put it down

"As we were doing maneuvers, we had engine trouble. We had to put the aircraft down here, adjacent to the freeway," said Michael Richards, Moore Air Flight instructor.

"Mr. Richards put the plane down as he instructed me: straight and true. We walked away with no injuries," said student pilot Bruce Hamilton.

This is not the first time Richards has had to make an emergency landing in a small plane. He said he had to do the same thing in 2007 on Lanai.

Now investigators will determine what caused the plane to lose power and also figure out a way to get it off the field.

As for Hamilton, who was out for his ninth flight, he viewed the whole experience as a learning one and said he will be back in the air as soon as they let him.

No reports of damage to the plane.
