MOORE, Okla. -

A hero from Plaza Towers Elementary is taking big steps in her recovery.

Jennifer Doan's spine was fractured while shielding two of her third-grade students during the tornado in Moore. Doctors told her she would never walk again.

However, she stood up and walked across the stage Sunday night to accept an award from the Vietnamese-American community for her heroic actions.

"I felt everything just twirling around me and then everything just feel on top of me," said Doan. "We should have all been able to walk out of there and I should have been able to hand every one of my kids back to their parents. It should have been that way."

Doan is now pushing for shelters in every Oklahoma school. She does plan to teach again in the fall.
