Pohoiki Bay closed on Big Island due to shark attack

PUNA, Hawaii -

The Department of Land and Natural resources has closed off Pohoiki Bay on the Big Island due to a shark attack.

According to Hawaii Island fire officials, the attack happened  at around 1:30 p.m.

A 16-year-old boy was surfing at Pohoiki Beach, when he was bit across both legs.

First responders transported the victim to the Pahoa Fire Station where he was then air lifted to Hilo Medical Center.

DLNR officials have posted up shark warning signs around the Pohoiki Beach area. The signs will remain up and the beach will remain closed until a Monday morning assessment by state and county officials and helicopter flyover.
