HILO, Hawaii -

Big Island police have arrested a 40-year-old woman after she escaped from a correctional center in Hilo.

Officers arrested Mary Lolita Santos of Mountain View for second-degree escape.

Police say they responded to call from a correctional officer at the Hale Nani Correctional Facility off Route 11. The female inmate had scaled a fence at 9:40 a.m., and fled on foot from the minimum security facility. After running along Route 11 and into the Puna-bound traffic lanes, Santos stopped a blue van and jumped into the passenger side window. State correctional officers were able to prevent the van from leaving until they took Santos into custody. The van then left the area.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed this incident or may know the van driver to call detectives at 961-2383, or call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
