Authorities have arrested a man they believe is involved in an international eel-smuggling operation.

Police tracked the man down to a hotel in Hampton Falls and arrested him there Friday morning.

Police attempted to arrest the man earlier Friday, but he escaped wearing a set of handcuffs on one hand. The state police chopper and several K-9 units then searched the area of Route 1 in Hampton.

A New Hampshire Fish and Game officer got a tip that two men suspected of illegally fishing eels off the New Hampshire coast would be in Hampton around 4:30 a.m.

The officer made contact and arrested one suspect, but failed to arrest the second suspect, who began fighting him. The officer pepper-sprayed the second suspect before he ran away into the woods. The suspect took off with handcuffs on one of his hands.

State police said eel meat, sold overseas, can be worth $2,000 a pound.
