Honolulu police are investigating an incident at Kamiloiki Skatepark in Hawaii Kai that created a significant safety hazard.
City officials say the skatepark, a facility frequented by children, was covered with surf wax.
The skatepark was closed to the public earlier this week when the vandalism was reported to the city by a regular to the park.
A Department of Park and Recreation crew was able to remove the wax on Wednesday and the park reopened on Thursday.
In addition to defacing city property, the city says this type of vandalism can also cause grave injury to children. Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says he hopes this will turn out to be an isolated incident.
This was the first known occurrence of wax vandalism at a city skatepark. Although the city did not incur additional costs to remove the wax, the crew was diverted from other projects.
