Police: Rash of gas thefts from Halawa Valley to East Oahu
CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are warning the public about
a recent rash of gas theft.
Since May, there have been nine reported cases from Halawa Valley to East Oahu.
Most of the thefts occurred during the night hours.
Thieves are targeting parked vehicles with plastic tanks, particularly SUVs and
The plastic tanks are easier to drill into and there is a less chance of a catastrophic spark. Siphoning is still the most common theft tactic.
There have been no arrests made. Anyone caught could face theft charges.
To avoid falling victim, park in a garage or a well-lit area; do not park on the
street; for added security, install a motion-detecting light on your garage or on
