A Nissan Rogue went up in flames just before 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.

According to Lt. Bobby Towne, with the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division, the driver of the SUV lost control, then slammed into a huge metal utility tower.
The force of the crash littered parts of the SUV along Kamehameha Highway.

Because of the fatal accident, the road was closed in both directions for hours.
There were reports, a pair of witnesses tried to help after the crash, but because the SUV burst into flames they were unable to get the driver out.
According to Towne, the fire was so intense, after it was put out police could not even determine if it was a man or a woman behind the wheel.

The medical examiner will now determine if the driver died from the fire or from injuries in the accident.
He will also look to see if there were any other factors - like alcohol or drugs that played a part in the deadly accident.

According to police, the SUV involved in the deadly accident has been spotted speeding before. In the past 4 days, an officer observed it racing by and called in the license plate to dispatch.
