Honolulu police say the 21-year-old woman who reported finding a newborn baby at Sandy Beach Sunday night has been confirmed to be the baby's mother.

On Tuesday, Keala Simeona was arrested for filing a false report.  She was released after posting $250 bail.

Additional offenses are not being pursued at this time, according to police.

The woman from Papakolea initially told police that she heard several people screaming and found the baby on the sand.

She took the infant to the hospital.

State officials say the 8-pound baby girl is doing well and drinking formula at the hospital.

The Department of Human Services Child Welfare Services will work with the family to complete an investigation.

Considering the circumstances, DHS will also ask the court to order the alleged mother to submit to DNA testing.  If an individual is identified as the father, DHS officials will also ask that he be DNA tested to confirm parentage.

The final decision as to whether the child will be returned to her family, or if parental rights will be terminated, lies with Family Court.  An initial hearing is scheduled on Monday.
