Public safety welcomes new class of adult correctional offcers
The Department of Public Safety welcomed a new class of adult correctional officers Friday at a graduation ceremony and luncheon held at the Hale Koa Hotel.
Twenty-seven recruits graduated from Basic Corrections Training and 10 non-uniform civilian PSD staff members graduated from Corrections Familiarization Training.
Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald was the special guest speaker at the graduation ceremony.
BCT is an 8-week training that includes 440 hours of classroom time and physical training. Recruits learn suicide detection and prevention, first aid, CPR, crisis intervention, gangs and subcultures, use of weapons, self defense tactics and physical agility training.
CFT is a 10-day training that includes 80 hours of instructional time to educate non-uniform Public Safety employees on basic correctional practices.
"This current class of corrections recruits worked hard over the past eight weeks to learn what it takes to handle one of the toughest jobs out there," said Sergeant Avery Gomes, BCT Sergeant in Charge. "An adult corrections officer isn't just a peacekeeper in the prisons and jails. They are counselors, mediators, mentors and, above all else, professionals."
This is the last class to be held before the planned revamp of the Basic Corrections Training. The next class will not be held for four months.
"This class was postponed for a week so we could implement some of the improved physical skills training and classroom instruction," said Max Otani, Deputy Director for Corrections. "In the next four months, we will be updating the basic corrections training to give our incoming corrections officers, as well as current employees, the most current and proven training currently in practice around the country."
The graduates have been assigned to the following correctional centers/facilities:
Halawa Correctional Facility - 9
Oahu Community Correctional Center - 8
Maui Community Correctional Center - 7
Women's Community Correctional Center - 2
Waiawa Correctional Facility - 1
