HILO, Hawaii -

Big Island firefighters saved a four-week-old puppy from a Hilo house home.

Officials say the blaze broke out Friday in the single-story home on Kualua Street at 11:39 a.m.

Upon arrival, Hilo firefighters found the front half and vehicle in carport fully involved in flames. They also say flames and smoke were exiting through roof rafters and bedroom windows in the back half of the home.

Fire companies were able to contain the fire before it spread to structures on the north and south side of the property.

No one was home at the time of the fire except the four-week-old puppy who was in a back bedroom of the house.

Firefighters say the puppy was unharmed.

Fire damage is estimated at $150,000 to the property.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Red Cross officials were called to assist the family.
