Kauai authorities have confirmed that the remains of a body recovered last March in Hanalei are that of Nancy Ellen Baugh, a Kauai woman who went missing 34 years ago.
Baugh, then 20, was reported missing in June 1979 after her boyfriend, Paul "Sonny" Featherman, was discovered dead in their home on Weke Road in Hanalei.
Co-workers reported Featherman missing when he failed to report to work at the Hanalei Bay Resort. The 27-year-old had been shot and killed by a single shotgun blast to the face. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
Authorities believed Baugh had been kidnapped and possibly murdered, but her body had not been discovered until March 2012, when a passerby located possible human remains near Waioli Stream and notified police. The partial skeletal remains were positively identified earlier this month through the help of forensic DNA testing.
Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar and Police Chief Darryl D. Perry credit the efforts of a joint Cold Case Task Force, Ke 'Ahi Pio'ole, for revitalizing the case.
Ke 'Ahi Pio'ole, meaning "the fire that never burns out," consists of investigators and attorneys from the Kauai Police Department and the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney that are dedicated to investigating unsolved homicides on Kauai
"Advances in technology have allowed us the opportunity to re-examine cold cases such as Ms. Baugh’s case," stated Prosecuting Attorney Justin Kollar. "But cold case investigations require assistance and cooperation from the public in order to be successful. KPD and OPA extend their gratitude to all those involved in this ongoing investigation, including the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command Central Identification Laboratory, the Sproat family, and especially the Baugh family for their continuing confidence."
Anyone with information on the murder of Nancy Baugh or Paul "Sonny" Featherman is urged to call Acting Lieutenant Bryson Ponce of the Kauai Police Department at (808) 241-1681.
