COLUMBIA, Mo. -

In an interview with the New York Times and ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Sunday, All-American defensive lineman Michael Sam said he is gay.

Sam said he told his teammates and coaches at the University of Missouri about his sexual orientation in August.

"They took it great. They rallied around me, they supported me, and I couldn't ask for better teammates," he told ESPN.

Sam is eligible for the NFL draft in May and has projected to be a third or fourth-round pick.  If he's drafted, he could become the first openly gay player in the league.
