Visiting hiker Jan Vankat was found alive and rescued from the Pali Notches hiking trail in Hawaii.

HONOLULU -

A fire rescue crew searching near the Pali Lookout Sunday found a hiker who was last seen on Oct. 23.

A CrimeStoppers bulletin issued Saturday night said 26-year-old Jan Vankat told his family that he was heading to the trail known as the Pali notches and would be home in the evening. He did not return home.

The CrimeStoppers bulletin said he was visiting from Europe and had been staying with an uncle in Hawaii since August. The bulletin described him as an experienced hiker.

Friends of Vankat heard he was reported missing and checked a log book along the trail Sunday morning. When they found his name they called authorities.

Crews from the Honolulul Fire Department began searching the Pali Lookout area about 9:30 am. Sunday. Vankat was found a short time later.

Police say he was taken by ambulance to the hospital in good condition.
