Ronald McDonald helps honor Pedestrian Awareness Month

In honor of Pedestrian Awareness Month, McDonalds has added 20 new big red footprints to remind pedestrians to look both ways before crossing the street.

Hawaii continues to recognize August as Pedestrian Awareness Month and is the only state in the nation to do so.

Ronald McDonald and Walk Wise Hawaii have come up with a way to get the pedestrian safety message across.

You've seen them on sidewalks before -- the big red footprints -- a friendly reminder from Ronald McDonald to look both ways before crossing the street. This year, McDonald's has added 20 new prints bringing the total up to 66 around the state.

“The most important information on pedestrian safety is education and awareness because infrastructure alone cannot save us on the street,” said Lance Rae of Walk Wise Hawaii.

To get that message across, Walk Wise Hawaii is teaming up with McDonald’s on sidewalks and restaurants.

“For the month of August, if you come inside, you have tray liners that educate the kids about pedestrian safety,” said Victor Lim, owner of McDonald's restaurants of Hawaii.

Organizers have put together a pledge for each student in the Kamaaina Kids program. If they share safety tips with kupuna and get it signed, they get a free Happy Meal.

And the program encourages keiki to look left, right and left again, make eye contact with drivers and wear reflective clothing at night.

“You need to be careful when you’re crossing streets, careful when driving. If we’ve saved one life, we’ve won,” Lim said.
