Saddle Road on the Big Island has been renamed the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.
On Saturday, the newest section of the road was unveiled at a dedication ceremony. It marked the completion of 41 miles of highway built since the project started in 2004.
The late senator was instrumental in securing federal funds for the thoroughfare. Irene Hirano Inouye, his widow, attended the event along with Gov. Neil Abercrombie and the mayors of all four counties.
The new segment of roadway officially opened to the public at 3 p.m.
