Safeway Inc. will open its fourth store on Maui and 21st store in Hawaii on Friday, Sept. 20 at the new Maui Lani Center in Wailuku.
The 59,000-square-foot store will celebrate its opening with a private blessing, followed by a VIP event on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Located in the heart of Central Maui, the new store will feature expanded departments such as deli, bakery, fresh seafood and poke section, floral, wine and spirits, and prepared food offerings -- including sushi, signature sandwiches and hot soups -- in a warm, inviting environment that highlights fresh, high-quality products and proprietary brands.
The Maui Lani store is the first in Hawaii to include Safeway's "center of store" feature, designed to enhance each customer’s shopping experience by offering products in a central location -- creating open and inviting aisles for easy navigation.
Customers will also enjoy other amenities such as an in-store Bank of Hawaii branch, Starbucks Coffee counter, China Express, Safeway Pharmacy and free wireless Internet service. The new store, which will be open 24 hours a day, is the anchor tenant at the Maui Lani Center and will employ 165 team members.
"We are thrilled to open our fourth store on Maui, which provides the community with another great shopping option," said George Glukfeld, Hawaii district manager. "This year marks Safeway’s 50th anniversary of doing business in the Islands and serving the people of Hawaii, and we are delighted to be celebrating this continuing, long-lasting relationship with a wonderful new store."
The Safeway Foundation will also make a special presentation and donations totaling $5,000 to two Wailuku nonprofit organizations -- Imua Family Services, which provides services to Maui families who are facing challenges pertaining to their child’s development, and Hui Malama Learning Center, which offers tutoring and educational enrichment programs to young people on Maui. The Safeway Foundation focuses its philanthropic efforts on causes such as hunger relief, education, health and human services, and people with disabilities. The foundation is able to support these causes thanks to the generous contributions of Safeway employees and customers.
