Ige took his oath of office and filed his papers to run in the democratic primary Monday at the Hawaii State Elections office in Pearl City.
Dozens of supporters accompanied Ige to the office.
"This is about a grass roots campaign and we're focused on reaching out and touching everyone. We want to be inclusive. We think that the people of Hawaii deserve better," said Ige. "It's about getting out into communities and talking with people. It's about person to person. I'm certain we can raise the money to tell our story; but the people of Hawaii deserve better and we will give that to them."
Ige faces incumbent Neil Abercrombie in the primary.
