Shoppers seek deep discounts after Christmas

Day after Christmas sales can be a boost or big disappointment for retailers.

Shoppers made gift returns and exchanges today at Ala Moana Center, while looking for deep discounts.

In what's been a "soft" year as some vendors put it, this week's sales are vital to the bottom line.

“There are a  lot of good deals," said Jolene Goh.

“I find high end stores don't have sales.  It's very selective.  They advertise they have sales, but they just have a few things on sale.  It's not a huge huge sale," said Christine Biggar.

The National Retail Federation says the week after Christmas can account for as much as 15 percent of what retailers see throughout the entire holiday season. 

With fewer parking spaces and on-going construction on one side of the Ala Moana Center, some businesses say the cash register isn't ringing up as many sales as they'd like.

 “My store is crowded now and it looks like we’re selling things, but business has been soft all around," said Suzie Metivier, a store manager at Reyn Spooner.

Sales dropped for the third straight week ending last Sunday according to Shoppertrak, which tracks 40,000 stores nationwide. 

Retailers are also keeping a close eye on picky shoppers.

 “I'm here to do a lot of returns," said Loren Pulice.

 “I've seen a lot of customers returning items, but also getting other things,” said Geoff Oumilda, a store manager at Town & Country Surf.  “It hasn't been as big of a loss as we thought it was going to be. It's been a good day after Christmas to some degree.”
